Mixing Up the Cardio!!

Wednesday is my longest day in the gym throughout the week as I run the gym from 11:00 – 3:00, then I have two evening clients, one at 5:00pm and one at 6:30pm, so in between that time I do my workout and some cardio. Today the weather was particularly nice for February in Southern California so at 4:00pm, after my shift and my weight training, instead of getting on the treadmill, I decided to drive the 1.5 miles to the beach and do a sand run!! It was a nice change of scenery and an added challenge running barefoot in the sand. Running in soft sand increases your calorie output by 30% because of the added stability factor and it employs a plethora of small muscle fibers in the feet, ankles, calves, legs, hips and glutes, that otherwise would get by-passed on level ground (or a treadmill) with shoes!
I’m feeling the extra work today, but it’s a good feeling!!!
I challenge you all to take your cardio to the sand or any unlevel ground such as grass, hiking, even if it’s walking, and not running, it increases the caloric output and burns more calories…..try it, you’ll see why!!! :-)
